John Doe noun

(US) an anonymous person, especially the plaintiff (=claimant) in a legal action, or a dead body that has not yet been identified. The female equivalent of Jane Doe is sometimes used, especially when describing an unidentified dead body.
The identity of a John Doe who has lived on life support in a Coronado nursing home for the past 14 years continues to be a mystery.
