ex parte application phrase

a request made to a court where only the party making the request is represented and the other side is not given any notice. A common example of an ex part application is a request for an injunction (=a court order preventing a person from doing something)
The court noted that it was better to hear the defendants before taking any decision on the issues raised by the plaintiff in the ex-parte application.
