Definitions of assize

  • a type of court which existed in Great Britain until 1971 where cases were tried by a judge and jury. Some jurisdictions still have similarly named courts (see additional notes below.

Additional Notes for assize

  • The court of assize, also known as assizes, were travelling courts held periodically across England and Wales. They heard both civil and criminal cases. However, they generally concentrated on criminal matters.

  • The Courts Act of 1971 replaced the assizes with Crown Courts. Until then, the most serious criminal offences were dealt with by assize courts.

  • Some jurisdictions still have similarly named courts. For example, in Cyprus The Assize Court has unlimited jurisdiction to hear any criminal case as a court of first instance. However, in practice only criminal cases where the maximum possible sentence for the offence in question exceeds 5 years imprisonment are brought before the Assize Court.
