About the University

Wake Forest University is a private university located in the United States in the state of North Carolina. The school was originally founded in 1834. The name of the university is derived from its original location in Wake Forest, which is a town in North Carolina located just north of Raleigh. Today, the university's main campus is located in nearby Winston-Salem. The university changed its location to Winston-Salem in 1956.

Wake Forest claims to offer the personal attention of a small liberal arts college coupled with the breadth and depth of a large research institution. They profess to maintain a faculty ideal of professors who are both teachers and scholars, resulting in meaningful research opportunities for students and classroom experiences with professors who are relevant in their fields.

With fewer than 12 students per professor, Wake Forest students do benefit from more personal engagement with teachers than some other American universities.

About the Law School

The community atmosphere and beautiful campus are the first things you will notice when you arrive at Wake Forest Law School. Wake Forest Law is nestled in a corner of the 345-acre Reynolda Campus of Wake Forest University.

At Wake Forest University School of Law, the small class size is often viewed as a major advantage. The school boasts a 10 to 1 student/faculty ratio and its first-year classes are no larger than 40 students. Small class size tend to lead to a more intimate and engaged atmosphere of learning.

The law school also boasts a wide variety of hands-on learning and practicing opportunities, including several law journals, seven practicing clinics, and over 30 student-led organizations.

Wake Forest University School of Law was named among the nation’s best value in private law schools by National Jurist as well as being ranked in the top 40 law schools in the nation.

About the Program

Wake Forest's LLM Program in American Law is a one-year program of study for international lawyers and students who have law degrees from institutions in their home countries who wish to enhance their legal careers by studying the laws of the United States. Often, students choose to extend their course of study of U.S. law for longer than one year for various reasons. Wake Forest graduates typically return to their home countries to resume or advance their legal careers in corporate law, public policy, litigation, public service, investment banking, and a wide range of other specialties related to international law.

The program is not designed to prepare students to take U.S. bar exams or to practice in the United States although many Wake Forest graduates elect to take the New York State Bar Examination to enhance their international credentials.

The program is a full-time program, beginning in the fall semester. The university offers small classes that include both American JD students and LLM students, a supportive mentoring program, a number of special opportunities, and the talents of Wake Forest's dedicated faculty. The Wake Forest University School of Law has offered strong international programs for over a decade, and many faculty members are experts in international legal issues.

Factors considered are the applicant's academic and professional record, the candidate's ability to enhance the academic program of the law school, and the geographic diversity of the class.
