Tufts is considered to be one of the U.S.' premier universities and known as a research center.
Tufts has about 9,000 students of which about 5, 000 are undergraduates and about 4,000 are graduate and professional students. The student body is ethnically and socioeconomically diverse and more than 1000 are international students. Tufts offers a rich and active student life.
In additional to the school of arts and sciences, the university includes a law and diplomacy school, medical school, dental school, veterinary school, engineering school, and a college of citizenship and public service. The school's overall mission is to promote active citizenship, globalism and environmentalism, and this are multidisciplinary themes that pervade many of its programs.
Tufts does well in rankings of all sorts: U.S. News and World Reports called it one of the 20 most selective schools in the U.S. Other lists have ranked it as number 7 for student happiness and number 2 for best campus food.
Tufts also became known for a global audience of TV-watchers as the fictional alma mater of Seinfeld character, Elaine.
The Fletcher School is not an ordinary law school. It is a graduate school of international affairs; established in 1933, it is the oldest one in the U.S.and it is deemed to be one of the world's foremost schools of international relations. Its mission is to prepare its students to work in government, business and non-governmental organizations and give them strategic cross-sector networks.
The Fletcher School has a cross-disciplinary approach. The curriculum is flexible which allows students to tailor their education to their particular interests. Fletcher also offers formal joint degree programs with other Tufts faculties including arts and sciences, engineering, the medicine, dentistry, nutrition science, and veterinary medicine. Joint degree programs with other universities' law, business, and journalism schools are also available.
Fletcher also hosts research centers dealing with human rights, conflict resolution, international business, international security, international environmental issues, and media.
Many of the professors and the alumni are prominently engaged in government, diplomacy, international organizations, NGOs and in the private and nonprofit sectors. 450 full-time students from over 70 countries join the eminent faculty, bringing diverse viewpoints to classroom discussions.
This is a place for those who want to participate on the global stage.
The Fletcher LL.M. is a one-year program in international law for legal practitioners or for those eligible to practice law. The faculty is international, and has extensive real-world experience. The program deals with the historical, political, cultural, and economic framework within which international lawyers operate. It prepares lawyers for a new or continuing career in international or non-governmental organizations, government agencies, international businesses and law firms, diplomatic missions, foreign and defense ministries, media, or other international institutions.
Some special features of the program are a three-day, year-end seminar held at Tufts' European Center in Talloires, France, and an international law "High Table": which is an on-going colloquium including presentations by faculty, visiting scholars, speakers, and students concerning their research.
The international law students study with others from over 85 countries. Three-quarters of the students in the LL.M. program come from outside the United States. They have backgrounds not only in law but also in economics, history, government, science and other disciplines.
Although Fletcher has been teaching international law since 1933, the LL.M. program is new, with the inaugural class enrolled in September 2008.
The program has no required courses but it has three optional curricular tracks: the Public International Law Track, the International Business Law Track, and the International Economic Law Track.
Entry to the program is restricted to students who have either a a J.D. degree from an ABA approved law school in the U.S., the academic legal education needed to take the bar examination in a foreign country, or the qualifications required for practicing law (bar admission) in a foreign country.
