St. John's University is a private Roman Catholic university which was founded in 1870 by the Vincentian community. The university is located in or around New York City, with five separate locations (the school has campuses in Queens, Staten Island, Manhattan and Oakdale).
St. John's is a four-year doctoral and research university. The university's curriculum and undergraduate programs offer a balance between the arts and sciences and professional fields. Currently, there are approximately 15,000 undergraduates and over 5,000 graduate students at the university.
The main campus of St. John's University is located in the neighborhood of Jamaica in the county of Queens in New York City. The over 100 acre campus is the central location for the university and contains several academic buildings, residence halls and athletic facilities. The Queens location offers easy access to Manhattan by subway.
St. John's University School of Law opened in 1925, 55 years after the opening of St. John's University.The School of Law is primarily located at the university's Queens campus.
The School currently boasts more than 13,000 living graduates and attracts students from over 200 colleges and universities throughout the United States. The current student body of approximately 1,000 represents students from many backgrounds, all of whom have excelled in undergraduate institutions, and many of whom have been employed prior to starting their law studies.
Today, St. John's School of Law's has expanded greatly to include students from all parts of the United States and from around the world. St. John’s School of Law offers two LL.M. Graduate Degrees. The programs are the LLM in Bankruptcy and the LLM in U.S. Legal Studies for Foreign Graduates.
Thirty credits are required for the LLM degree. The course of study is full-time for one year or part-time for two years. The program begins in August.
The university claims to offer the only LLM in Bankruptcy in the United States and accepts only about 12 students each year. The curriculum includes more than two-dozen specialized bankruptcy courses taught by a world-class faculty of leading professors, judges and practitioners.
The LLM in U.S. Legal Studies for Foreign Law School Graduates provides foreign lawyers with an opportunity to come to St. John’s Law School and New York City to acquire new skills in U.S. legal studies and gain eligibility to apply for the New York Bar and to provide foreign law graduates full exposure to the core subjects of U.S. law.
Application Fees
Each application must be accompanied by a non-refundable application fee of $100.
Acceptance Fees
In addition, acceptance fees are required of all applicants and are credited toward tuition if the applicant enrolls. Acceptance fees are due on the date specified in the letter of acceptance. Acceptance fees are as follows:
- First acceptance fee - $300
Due within three weeks of acceptance unless a different date is specified in the acceptance letter.
- Second acceptance fee - $800
Due within one month from the due date of the first acceptance fee unless a different date is specified in the acceptance letter.
Acceptance fees will be applied towards the student’s tuition. They are non-refundable if the student does not enroll in the program.
