The University of San Diego (USD) is a Catholic university which provides academic excellence and professional knowledge and also aims to inspire students to grow spiritually, morally and socially. It is devoted to preparing ethical leaders and to public service.
It has a breathtaking location, overlooking the city of San Diego and the Pacific Ocean. The campus, which is filled with beautiful landscapes and Spanish Renaissance architecture, is 2 miles north of downtown San Diego.
USD was chartered in 1949 and has about 7000 students--approximately 5000 undergraduates, 1400 graduate students and 1150 law students. About 3%of the students are international. It comprises 6 schools, the School of Law, the School of Business Administration, the School of Leadership and Education Science, the School of Nursing and Health Science, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the newest addition, the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies. All together, the university offers more than 60 bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees.
In the rankings, USD is number 110 among national universities, according to U.S. News and World Report, and the Princeton Review rates USD as the 6th most beautiful campus.
Student life includes many club and intramural sports, including surfing, as well as "Greek life", i.e. fraternities and sororities.
The attractiveness of USD's campus and climate is matched by its high intellectual level. USD is a member of the Order of the Coif, the highest rank of U.S. law schools. Its faculty has been ranked number 22 based on scholarly reputation and the law school is usually placed in the 40 in the U.S.
USD offers a wide variety of special programs including the Children's Advocacy Center, the Patient Advocacy Center, the Center for Public Interest Law, the Energy Policy Initiatives Center, the Institute for Law and Philosophy, and the Center for the Study of Constitutional Originalism. Several clinical education programs are available, in which upper-level law students, supervised by a practicing attorney, provide free legal assistance to members of the community on a variety of issues including entrepeneurship, immigration, income tax, and landlord-tenant.
With help from an effective Career Services office, a high percentage of graduates find employment shortly after graduation.
