The Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg (commonly known either as the "University of Heidelberg" or just "Heidelberg") is a public research university located in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The university was established in 1386, and is the oldest university in Germany.
Today, Heidelberg consists of twelve faculties and offers degree programs at undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral levels in approximately 100 disciplines. It is a German Excellence University, as well as a founding member of the League of European Research Universities, the Coimbra Group, and the European University Association.
With 30 Nobel Prize laureates among its many graduates, the university continues to emphasise research. It is consistently ranked among Europe's top overall universities and is increasingly popular with graduate students. International students account for more than 20 percent of the entire student body.
The Faculty of Law has been an integral part of Heidelberg University since it was founded in 1386. Today, it is considered to be one of the outstanding law faculties in Germany with a reputation for excellence all over the world.
The main research interests of the Faculty centre around the following topics: harmonisation of private and public law at a European and international level; the ongoing refinement and adaptation of commercial, fiscal and labour legislation; the design of a legal framework for dealing with issues posed by statehood and European and global trans-nationality; criminology; the history of law. These interests are pursued by the relevant institutes dedicated to German and European corporate and commercial law, foreign and international private and business law, German and European administrative law, financial and fiscal legislation, European and international medical law, health legislation and bioethics, criminology, and the history of law. The Faculty is also closely associated with the Max Planck Institute of Comparative Public Law and International Law.
The Faculty's international contacts are wide-ranging. It provides an extensive exchange programme for its students and offers graduates from foreign universities all over the world a much sought-after LLM programme. In collaboration with the law faculties of the Universities of Cracow and Mainz it established a School of German Law for Polish students at the Jagiellonian University of Cracow in 1998 and with the same partners it runs a European postgraduate research group on "System Transformation and Law Harmonisation in the Uniting Europe". It is also actively involved in the development of the German-speaking Andrássy University of Budapest, conducts an LLM programme on International Law in Santiago de Chile and maintains close partnerships with law faculties in Montpellier, Cambridge, Ferrara, Budapest, Cracow, Georgetown and Porto Alegre.
Master of Laws in International Law (LL.M.) - Investments, Trade and Arbitration
This program is offered by the Faculties of Law of the University of Heidelberg and the University of Chile, with the academic support of the Max-Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law and of the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.
The Program aims mainly at offering a comprehensive analysis of current and prospective trends in the field of international law in an era of globalization, as well as in that of international trade and investments, and in the methods for arbitration and settlement of disputes in these areas.
Emphasis shall be placed on subjects relating to the regulation of international trade, particularly the law of international trade, investments law and the settlement of disputes. In this context, special attention shall be given to subjects such as international arbitration, procedures before the World Trade Organization and ICSID.
The Program is organized on a yearly basis. Three terms shall be offered in Santiago de Chile, at the Heidelberg Center for Latin America. The curriculum includes a three month period for the preparation of the thesis. A final one month term shall be offered in Heidelberg, at the Max-Planck Institute and the University of Heidelberg. During the latter, students shall participate in two workshops and complete their theses.
A minimum of eight courses will be offered in each term held in Santiago, while during the Heidelberg term there will be two workshops. All courses are compulsory.
The final exam (defense of thesis) for the Master´s Degree in International Law shall take place in Heidelberg. Defense of thesis may exceptionally be held in Santiago de Chile. The best thesis will be published like articles by the Max-Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law or by the Institute of International Studies of the University of Chile.
Courses will be conducted in either Spanish or English. Courses in the German language shall be available to participants free of cost.
The Master´s Program in International Law, with special reference to Investments, Trade and Arbitration is available to lawyers and graduates of juridical sciences on a worldwide basis.
