Frankfurt University, located on four campuses in Frankfurt am Main, was privately funded in 1914 with the aim of providing an excellent atmosphere in which to research, study, think, and create. It is named after writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, one of the most famous natives of Frankfurt.The university is characterized by dynamic research and the conscious commitment of the citizens of Frankfurt to the fundamentals of international trade and industry.

In recent years, inspired by the city of Frankfurt's standing as one of Europe's financial centers, the University has focused on law, history and economics with the goal of becoming Germany's leading university for finance and economics. It created the Institute for Law and Finance, and the Center of Financial Studies. It also developed a new MBA program in cooperation with Duke University, and established an international award for research in financial economics, the Deutsche Bank Prize in Financial Economics.
The Institute for Law and Finance(ILF) was established in 2002 as a non-profit organization by the Frankfurt University with the support of many prominent institutions.
Leading commercial banks and international law firms, the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the City of Frankfurt and the State of Hesse, as well as the European Central Bank and the Deutsche Bundesbank have been actively involved in ILF from its conception.
ILF offers an interdisciplinary curriculum with a wide variety of courses, focusing on economics and law.
The student body is small and the faculty, consisting of leading academics and practitioners, is large, which provides an intensive learning experience. The curriculum, students and faculty are all international.
ILF also has exchange programs with Columbia University in New York, University of Amsterdam, and Aarhus Business School.
Frankfurt is one of the major financial centers in Europe and plays a central role in European and global finance. The ILF offers a unique postgraduate program leading to a Master of Laws in Finance (LL.M. Finance). The program was developed in response to the demand by young professionals for advanced training in both law and finance so as to excel in today’s financial world.
The result is a Master’s program aimed at students interested in combining theoretical knowledge and practical training in the specialized fields of law and international finance. Major banks, international law firms and public institutions, and leading financial regulatory institutions, play a significant role in the development and implementation of the program.
The LLM program is international and interdisciplinary. Courses include European and international corporate law, capital markets and securities law, European monetary policies and central banking.
The curriculum gives both a theoretical understanding and a practical insight into banks, corporations, law firms, accounting firms, the European Central Bank and Germany's Bundesbank. There is also the opportunity to participate in a two-month internship at one of ILF's sponsors from the financial, regulatory, central banking, international law and accounting areas.
As the LLM Finance was specifically designed for students of law, fiance or economics, applicants must possess a degree from a recognized and accredited university in one,or a combination of the above.
English is the language of instruction so potential applicants must also must provide evidence of English proficiency unless they possess English as their first language or took their first degree in English. Proficiency in English must be proven to surpass a level of TOEFL 600, CBT TOEFL 250, IBT TOEFL 100, Cambridge CAE (grade C or above) or IELTS 6.5.
The tuition fee for the LLM Finance is approximately €15,000. This does not cover living costs, teaching materials or health insurance.
