An LLM in International Law provides an understandable and clear guide to the complexities of international law in the twenty-first century. Significant issues including globalization, international terrorism, the legitimacy of the United Nations and other international legal institutions, the limits of unilateral state action and the relations between the first and third worlds, are studied from a comprehensive legal perspective.
In most LLM International Law programs, in addition to the core courses, candidates are often able (or required) to take additional courses, for example: International Law and the Use of Force, International Criminal Law, International Human Rights, International Refugee Law, International Environmental Law, Law of the World Trade Organization, Law of International Finance, among many others. Many institutions require a dissertation that must be substantially related to the area of International Law.
An LLM in International Law will allow students to examine international law in action and in the context of a decade that calls for conflict resolution and effective regulatory structures at a global level and encourages students to think beyond Western control of international legal theory and practice. An LLM in International Law encourages and supports the development of research skills and aims to train students for a career in international law or international organizations.
