An LLM in Intellectual Property Law (or an LLM in IP Law) is an extremely popular legal specialty in recent years given the international nature of the subject. Intellectual property, to a certain extent, is harmonized in the international context, with various international treaties being implemented into local, national legislation.
Intellectual property (IP) is an umbrella term referring to creations of the mind or intellect, e.g., inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. Intellectual property is sometimes divided into two categories: (i) industrial property, which includes inventions (patents), trade marks, industrial designs, and geographic indications of source; and (ii) copyright, which includes literary and artistic works such as novels, poems and plays, films, musical works, artistic works such as drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures, and architectural designs. The three traditional areas of IP are trade marks, patents and copyrights.
An LLM in Intellectual Property Law is considered by many to be a valuable means of separating yourself from other IP lawyers around the world. Such programs also enable lawyers and students to learn more about comparative law in the IP context.
