In today’s multicultural and interconnected world, more and more law students and practitioners are choosing to pursue an LLM program to give them a competitive advantage or to help them in their aim of becoming nationally and internationally recognised experts in their field. Never before have universities developed such a breadth and variety of courses in order to meet the varied and sometimes highly specialised needs of students. Not only do students have tremendous choice with regard to the subject area of an LLM program, they have the additional advantage of being able to choose their preferred country of study. A growing number of universities in non-English speaking countries are opting to develop LLM programs and LLM courses taught in English so as to attract the world’s best and brightest.
In the United States, LLM programs are designed and aimed specifically at international students with courses primarily being delivered in English. Studying an LLM program in the US has many advantages. Firstly, several of the universities have internationally renowned names which increase cross-national recognition of LLM studies and add value upon completion of a particular LLM program. Such universities are also able to attract some of the leading thinkers in their field which gives students the opportunity to learn from and interact with minds at the forefront of their subject area. Imagine also the cultural benefits of studying an LLM program in such cosmopolitan cities as Chicago, New York, San Francisco or Miami. Many universities also give students the option of getting practical work experience while pursuing LLM programs in the US either though internships in the public sector or law firms, or through legal clinics.
Alternatively, students may choose to pursue an LLM program at a European university. These courses may be especially attractive to students wishing to have the experience of living in Europe while allowing them the opportunity to study in environments rich with culture and history. LLM programs at European universities may also be smaller and more intimate which allows for closer contact between students and opportunities to make friends and contacts that last a lifetime.
The greatest benefit of pursuing an LLM program at this time is the great choice available to students to combine subject interest with place of interest. Human rights studies can be pursued in Miami or The Netherlands; a highly specialized environmental law course can be pursued in Oregon, or one can opt to study a general LLM with a course in environmental law in London. Students can study pure law courses or choose to blend elements of Finance, Politics or Urban Development studies with their law studies.
With such a wide variety of courses on offer, students can find the perfect course to suit their needs. The only limitation is your level of English!
