United KingdomAn LLM offers a means of specialising in a certain law-related subject while experiencing life in another city (or country). Although obtaining an LLM is not for everyone, it can be an effective means of enhancing your resume and ultimately your career.
Once the decision to pursue an LLM has been made, potential applicants often find it extremely difficult to find a suitable LLM guide to narrow down the list of possible schools to attend. Where is the best place to find an LLM guide? Most of the various law school rankings are often based solely on the quality of a particular school’s JD or LLB programs. Of course, in most instances, a law school which has a strong reputation also has a quality LLM program. But this is not always the case. Rankings can be a useful guide in determining the reputation and quality of a particular law school. However, there are very few (if any) rankings systems which refer solely to LLMs and thus could be called a true LLM guide. Also, the goals and needs of LLM students often differ from those wishing to attend the law school to obtain their initial postgraduate degree.
A potential LLM student is often more concerned with things like the subject matter of the courses offered, the location of the school, the cost of living of the city where the school is located, the size of the LLM classes, the potential for those holding an LLM to get a job in the city where the law school is located and the starting salary for lawyers in that city. Potential applicants should view as many “rankings” as possible and make a decision based on the overall consensus rather than any one ranking.
TransLegal recognises that there are a number of different LLM guides and factors to consider when choosing where to pursue an LLM. For that reason, we have come up with a unique ranking system that takes into account the wide variety of determinative factors. Visitors to the rankings page on our site can sort and search by the size of the LLM program, the cost of living of the city where the school is located, the number of students in a particular LLM program, the ranking of the law school, the number of LLM programs at a particular school or the particular subject matter of the courses offered. This can be an essential tool in determining which school is the best fit for you and provide you with a true LLM guide.
In addition to the various school rankings, there are a number of individual considerations which must be taken into account. Potential applicants may wish to apply to a school that offers courses specialising in a particular area of law. It is also useful to consult a particular law school’s professional network or employment assistance which may assist graduates in finding helpful contacts and enhance the prospects of finding a job.
TransLegal’s LLM guide is often the first step in your journey of studying law abroad. You’ll have to investigate and assess the benefits and drawbacks of taking a year (or more) to further your studies. One of the purposes of TransLegal’s LLM guide is to provide you with all the information and preparation you need to determine whether an LLM degree is something worthwhile for you to pursue.
