For a variety of reasons, many students and practitioners choose to pursue an LLM in the United Kingdom. And why not? The UK has so many world-renowned universities to choose from, often with LLM programmes which are far less expensive than their American counterparts.
Many of these universities offer LLM programmes to students and professionals who are in possession of a legally-recognised qualification or degree. Included among the institutions in the United Kingdom are many world-renowned schools that today make up the federal University of London, numerous other modern universities, as well as a number of smaller and often highly specialised universities and colleges.
In order to qualify for an LLM programme in the United Kingdom, students and professionals normally must be in possession of a legally-recognised qualification. The minimum entry requirement for an LLM programme is normally a degree in law from a UK university or the equivalent from an overseas institution.
For most UK Universities, if you have not carried out your prior academic work in English, you will need to take a language proficiency test to show you have the necessary command of the language to get the most out of your course.
An LLM in the United Kingdom, in and of itself, is insufficient qualification to practise as a solicitor or barrister since this requires completion of the Legal Practice Course or Bar Vocational Course. However, obtaining an LLM in the United Kingdom does provide a unique opportunity to gain specialist knowledge of a particular area of law and/or an understanding of various legal concepts and systems. Of course, part of the appeal of taking an LLM in the UK is enjoying the benefits of living and studying in an English-speaking jurisdiction. As with other degrees, an LLM in the United Kingdom can be studied on a part-time basis at many institutions and in some instances by distance learning.
TransLegal’s LLM guide is the best place to begin your quest for an LLM in the UK. Our guide allows you to sort and search by city and region, as well as by course or programme. This guarantees that you will find the LLM programme in the United Kingdom which best suits you.
