LLM in Germany

For a variety of reasons, many students and professionals opt to take an LLM in Germany. Both because of its cultural and historical significance, as well as the quality of its renowned universities, Germany is often seen as an attractive option at which to take an LLM.

An LLM in Germany is generally viewed as an advanced legal qualification of supplementary character. As such, LLM programs are generally open not only to law graduates, but also to graduates of related subjects and/or those who display a genuine interest in the relevant area of study.

Many professionals now take career breaks in order to study for an LLM in Germany, particularly with respect to subjects of growing importance or those with constantly changing dynamics, such as European law or IP law.

Perhaps surprisingly, many of the LLM programs in Germany are offered in English (along with German and even Spanish). For most universities at which you can obtain an LLM in Germany, if you have not carried out your prior academic work in the required language, you will need to take a language proficiency test to show you have the necessary command to get the most out of your course.
