Obtaining an LLM degree can be a very costly experience, particularly if you plan on studying in the United States. In addition, potential LLM students are often concerned with the cost of living of the city where the LLM program is located. However, like anything else, you will have to investigate and assess the benefits and drawbacks of taking a year (or more) to further your studies. Once you have made the decision to pursue an LLM degree, and the program(s) you wish to apply for, it’s time to look into financing the degree.{{image}}
From small grants to full LLM scholarships, there are numerous options to help LLM students pay or defray the costs – both living and tuition – of an LLM degree. Indeed, the schools themselves often offer merit based and/or need-based LLM scholarships for students taking part in their LLM programs. Of course, these vary from LLM program to LLM program. Moreover, many, if not most, universities provide comprehensive information about other, external sources of financing for LLM degrees.
Naturally, LLM scholarships, like all scholarships, are subject to eligibility requirements, but some requirements are as simple as acceptance into an LLM program or citizenship. Some scholarships may be country/region, and/or subject matter specific. Typically, LLM scholarships require the completion of an application and a letter of motivation, which addresses such matters as academic merit and financial need.
Significantly, LLM scholarships may not be payable directly to successful applicants and instead may be set off against the LLM program’s fee invoice for the year. And, sometimes, scholarships include a return ticket between the applicant’s home country and the country where the LLM program is located.
