I must say that reality show “What not to wear” is one of my favorites — I’m in favor of pointing people in the right direction when it comes to style and dress. That being said, the Chicago Bar Association hosting a fashion show is going a bit too far.
According to Styleite, the Chicago Bar Association held a “What Not to Wear” fashion show in order to “teach” lawyers about proper modes of professional dress. According to Above the Law, this panel of legal fashionistas, particularly Professor Maureen Collins of John Marshall Law School:
• “The interview world is no place for a cheap, ugly tie.”
• “I shouldn’t know anything about your underwear… bra straps are meant to be hidden”
• “Khakis were invented for men who can’t match clothes”
• “Maybe you bought your suit at Express or somewhere… and you bent over to get a Danish and I can see your tramp stamp.”
I can definitely agree with the second point, but as for the first point it would be logical to think that if you are wearing a cheap ugly tie-then you probably don’t know it. As for the last point– do men have tramp stamps or is this only directed to women, also I’m sure Express would beg to differ with her comment.
So here it is in a nutshell from the fashion peanut gallery in Chicago. If you’re aiming to be taken seriously, the jury says, the more homely, conservative, and tasteless the better. Styleite put it perfectly, “Think: Mother Superior with the requisite touch of Little House on the Prairie — we’re not sure, but we think exposed ankle is allowed.”
Maybe they should just stick to their day jobs.
