second-degree murder noun

the crime of knowingly and illegally killing someone or killing someone as a result of having caused them deliberate and serious physical injury. The definition depends on the jurisdiction, and is used to distinguish this form of murder from first degree murder (=the unlawful, deliberate, and planned killing of someone)
Mark Chapman was sentenced to 20 years to life in 1981 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.
