mitigation (of punishment)
a reduction in punishment because of some facts that reduce the guilty party's level of guilt (eg the guilty party may have no prior convictions or may have cooperated fully with the police investigation)
Their lawyer is set to plead mitigation on their behalf, stressing their guilty pleas and remorse.
