mischief rule
nouna rule of statutory interpretation according to which a judge attempts to determine the legislature's intention behind a particular piece of legislation. It is used when the literal rule and golden rule do not apply.The classic statement of the mischief rule is that given by the Barons of the Court of Exchequer in Heydon's Case (1854).
