insure
to protect yourself against risks by paying a company money in return for the company paying your costs in case of accident, injury, theft, damage to your property etc
Under the scheme, the government will insure banks against losing more money from loans and investments.
Common Mistakes
- To ensure that something will be done means to make it certain to happen.
- To assure means to promise or convince: When amending the contract, the lawyer assured her client that she would ensure that the client received a better deal.
- In contrast, to insure someone or something means to protect the person or object against risk. In the event the person is injured or killed or the object is damaged or lost, the insurance company will then pay out a sum of money to cover the injury or loss: The company was insured against accidents in the workplace.
