something a party to a hearing says out-of-court that is against his or her interest and which can be used as evidence in court. NB Admissions by party-opponents are not hearsay (=the report of another person's words by a witness which is often not allowed as evidence).
The gas company argued that the appraisal could not be an admission by party opponent because the appraiser was not an agent of the gas company.
