Proper nouns in English are usually capitalized, i.e. the names of people, places, countries and titles. Simple as the general rule is, problems may arise with nouns that may be used in both the proper or common form. In such a situation, the noun should only be capitalized when used as a proper noun.
Drafter’s Tip
Consider the examples below:
• A company’s board of directors is usually appointed at the annual general meeting.
• The Board of Directors of Acmana Ltd. was appointed at the annual general meeting.
It is only in the second example that the term “board of directors” needs to be capitalized as in that case a specific board i.e. the Board of Directors of Acmana Ltd.
