RESEARCH STRATEGY

1) What, if anything, do the rules of the Arbitration Institute say about choosing a third arbitrator?

Using the Google search engine (www.google.com), enter the following search query:

Stockholm chamber of commerce

Find the following link on the first results page: The SCC Institute - Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber ... .

Clicking on the relevant link takes you to the English version of the homepage of the Arbitration Institute's web site. At the top of that page you will find a link to Rules. Clicking on this link takes you to a page which offers you a choice of rules. Click on the small English link below the rule to open the document you need to find the answer to question 1.

Answer

The following summary has been adapted from article 16 of the Rules of the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC):

i. The parties are free to choose the number of arbitrators. If more than one arbitrator is appointed, each party must appoint an equal number of arbitrators (e.g. two per party).
ii. If one party does not appoint an arbitrator within the given time limit, the SCC will appoint one for them.
iii. If the parties do not choose their own arbitrators the SCC will appoint either one or three, depending on the complexity of the case.

There are only two parties to this contract, and each must appoint an equal number of arbitrators. Therefore, as the arbitration clause in the contract stipulates that there will be three arbitrators, the third arbitrator will be appointed by the SCC.

These preferences allow the user to determine, for example, the language in which the search will be carried out, the language in which the user uses the search engine, the number of results displayed per search window, etc.

Preferences are usually modified by following a link appearing on the start page of the search engine.

To see preferences in action, go to www.google.com. To the right of the search field there is a link to preferences. Follow this link and change the interface language to English.

Google also offers further advanced search options, language tools and many other useful services. Click more to see what is available. These features will be explored in task 2.
